We've hit form at just the right time. If Ross County lose to Celtic today we'll be 8th, and one of only two of the bottom six to have won their last game - the other being Motherwell, who were playing bottom club ICT. Motherwell lost their previous game, as did Kilmarnock, who drew this weekend, ICT have lost three in a row, Dundee have lost six in a row.
We're unbeaten in our last four games, with 8 points, and only one goal conceded. Motherwell have taken 5 points from those games, Ross County 4 (if they lose today), Kilmarnock 3, ICT 1 and Dundee 0.
Over the last 10 games, the form table looks like:
12 Accies
11 Kilmarnock
9 Ross County
8 Motherwell
8 ICT
7 Dundee
In the real table, we have a 7 point cushion over the automatic relegation spot, and if County lose today we'll have the best goal difference in the bottom six. There's now every reason to believe we're going to stay up. Indeed, we're capable of winning all our five remaining games and finishing seventh, matching our highest-ever post-war finish.
But Martin Canning rightly counselled caution yesterday: we shouldn't get too down about losses or too up about wins. While it would take a remarkable collapse for us to finish 12th, we still need at least five points to ensure we avoid the play-off spot. If we can beat Killie at home a week on Saturday, we'll be almost there, making that a very big game for us; every game from here in is a big one.
