Betfred Cup

Postby EKaccie » Thu May 26, 2016 3:40 pm

What does everyone think of the new league cup with the draw being tomorrow
The seeding look like this

North section

Top seeds: St Johnstone, Ross County, Inverness Caledonian Thistle, Dundee

Second seeds: Dundee United, Falkirk, Raith Rovers, Dumbarton

Unseeded clubs: Dunfermline Athletic, Alloa Athletic, Peterhead, Brechin City, East Fife, Cowdenbeath, Forfar Athletic, Elgin City, Stirling Albion, Montrose, Arbroath, Cove Rangers

South section

Top seeds: Motherwell, Partick Thistle, Hamilton Academical, Kilmarnock

Second seeds: Rangers, Morton, St Mirren, Queen of the South

Unseeded clubs: Ayr United, Livingston, Stranraer, Airdrieonians, Albion Rovers, Stenhousemuir, Queen's Park, Clyde, Annan Athletic, Berwick Rangers, Edinburgh City, East Stirlingshire

So we avoid whistle, the well and that Ayrshire lot but could end up with one of the ugly sisters!
Also with the addition of the bonus point (any gaming ending a draw goes to penalties with the winner of the shootout gaining an extra point) how do you rate our chance's

In August 2014, 730 turned out at NDP for a Rd1 game against Arbroath where we knew on the day if we were through to the next round or out of the cup.

This is the biggest farce yet in Scottish football and will be scrapped after one season.

A league style cup with minor Scottish teams.
Lots of meaningless games, no excitement, no knockout...no thanks!

Biggest danger to us of the second seeds in tonight's draw is Rangers. Any one of Morton, St Mirren or QoS would leave us favourites to win the group, or at worst finish one of the best second placed teams.

So we've got a fighting chance of getting through to the last 16.

Which suits me, as I'm on holiday for four out of five of the group matches.

Will Accies treat these games serious , Alex Neil used to use the first round of the challenge cup as a warm up to be ready for the first league game of season , Canning has lost both cup games to lower league teams so any draw will be hard .

No disagreement from me.

But unless Rangers are in our group, we'll be favourites (on paper) to win it.

I hope we treat these games seriously. It's a great chance to get to the last 16.

Airdrie??? They are an irrelevance. If we got "Rangers " first up and beat them, we'd still have three games to play to get to Round 2. It's farcical!

If we beat Rangers and don't finish top, then we don't deserve to win the cup.

I for one am looking forward to it, its something different and I think should be quite interesting. Change isn't always a bad thing, and won't do anyone any harm to try it.

Don't you mean "don't deserve to reach Round 2", you know, the round we reached when we won that Arbroath match in front of 730.

Better than usual pre season games but effectively that is just about what they are. St mirren the first team we draw.

About as tough a group as we could have got without Rangers.

Nevertheless, we should still be the favourites to win that group.

Let's show a bit of cup ambition and go for it!

I wonder what the prices will be for these four first round games?

It's also a bit of a shame for the smaller clubs as it substantially reduces any chance of progressing to later rounds. They may win one match but not much hope of them winning three to qualify.

The sections were scrapped after two seasons last time due to poor attendances, once fans see through the hype of this relaunch, unless it's a fiver entry, this is bound to die an early death.

As a competition, I have failed to see it's relevance in the overall scheme of things. Adding more games doesn't change my view

The Scottish League Cup has been the third major trophy in Scottish football since the end of the Second World War.

It's a major trophy.

I saw us lose in the semi final in 1979 at East End Park, the closest we've come to a Hampden final, and to a major trophy win, in my lifetime (and in the lifetimes of anyone under 80).

Do you think Ross County, Raith Rovers or Livingston fail to see its relevance?

I'd love to see us win it, or even come close.

Of course Accies and the other teams teams in our group will want to win, but they may not be that despondent if they lose . I gave a personal opinion but like others, I have sometimes wondered just how seriously Accies have taken the league cup, major trophy or not .

In saying that, I remember feeling down about losing the Ramsden's cup final against St Mirren on 2012 .The Ramsden/ challenge cup seemed to have more relevance to me than the league cup, as Accies were generally more competitive in same.

However, Accies can feel free to change my mind about the league cup any time they like, and like WW I'd still love to see us win it or even come close
