League Cup section-final games

Postby porcupine » Tue Jul 25, 2023 10:10 pm

Seems there’s no better opportunity for us to go out to win on Saturday against Cove and qualify as the Group leaders. Livy will probably take all three points against Clyde.

Play like we did no Saturday at Almondvale and we’re through to the next round for the first time in ages.

Positive thinking, lads!!

Aah but this is Accies were are talking about.

Its simple beat Cove and we qualify as group winners., with 11 points. Livi play Clyde and i would expect them to win easily only giving them 10 points. Of course if we draw we will be runners up, given the goal differece with Livi. And of course the unthinkable, we lose and we finish 3rd in group, as Cove would then have 9 points

As its Accies, I can see us drawing the game with 90 minutes played and as usual we lose a last minute goal, which will knock us out.

But positive thoughts come on Accies its in your own hands

If we draw and win on pens we should be through. If we draw and lose on pens it's very unlikely I think.

Let's just win.

Edit: maybe nine points will be enough, quite a few groups where the runner up might not reach nine.

Looks like a team growing in confidence so hopefully we will go for it. If we do, based on what we saw on Sat we look capable of getting the win.

This is really interesting now!

After Kilmarnock dropping 2 points tonight and assuming Forfar don’t beat St Mirren in 90 minutes it looks like a shoot out between us and Motherwell for one of the 3 seeded spots in the next round.
So we need to beat Cove or we’ll finish 2nd to Livi and although it won’t be a walkover you’d expect Motherwell to beat East Fife. Both teams have 8 points and +3 goal difference. Motherwell have scored more goals however.
Therefore if we can beat Cove by 1 more goal than Motherwell beat East Fife (if we both win) we would avoid Celtic,Rangers, Aberdeen, Hibs and Hearts in the next round.

A goal in 96 minutes to make it a 2-2 draw. For a change it was Accies scoring at the death for a draw. So we end up on 9 points in 2nd place, as we lost penalty shoot out and did not get bonus point

Sorry folks we are out of cup its the top 3 second place teams based on goal difference and we were the 4th placed

Stirling 10 points

Morton 9 points goal difference 11 for 4 against

Raith 9 points goal difference 8 for 5 against

Accies 9 points goal difference 7 for 4 against

Raith get 3rd place as scored more goals

Oh well. Decent pre season. We don’t need this cup or any other to add more games, injuries, distractions etc… league only this year.

Thought we looked really good for most of the first half. Didnt get the second we deserved though and lost a sloppy goal.

Second half was a tough watch to be honest. Feels like there is a fear factor when playing at home. If we concede, confidence falls through the floor. Need to learn to kill of teams when in control.

Thought Lewis Smith had a couple of nice runs and played a part in our late goal. Hopefuly he takes confidence from this and kicks on.

Sair yin but need to go again next week.

Yea I thought we looked good in the first half too - but did not take the chances we created. Their goal was a great shot but he should have been stopped before that. 2nd half was destroyed by the team changes I thought - we moved to a defence and an attack and no midfield. When will Rankin learn that punting the ball up when the defenders are pretty big will not work. Tumilty's goal was a beauty but I feel he still shirks too many tackles. Penalties - Zanata's penalty sums him up - little effort! Not sure our last penalty taker should have been taking it as he looked well off the pace during the game - I am always amazed by those players who don't take penalties. Cove are no great shakes but they did have one or 2 players who caused us some problems - but the truth is we should have beaten them.

Anyway - on to next week - 3 points are needed here and we have the team to take them - just worry a bit about those who are 'directing' the tactics!!

Agree but if we’d got through and played Motherwell Hearts, Celtic or Rangers we’d have potentially made enough to sign a good player eg McGowan which would have been a bonus.
Realistically next week is a more important game with regards to the season ahead and promotion.

When Dario Zanatta is on, we are a man down every time. Let him go and use money for someone else.

Snatching defeat from the jaws of victory............AGAIN! Pathetic penalty from Zanatta. Not surprised that he is released by previous teams.

And I expect to hear the usual line about "The League is far more important than a diddy cup".

After a great first half, if we capitulate again next week against Cove like we did today, then how will we ever beat this team?

Sick of this negative outlook tbh. Heard it every year since god knows when.

One more goal against Brechin would have seen us through. Raith qualify ahead of Dundee on goals scored. This format is a farce and the crowds suggest fans don't like it, only 2,337 at Dundee for a must win match (actually must win by a couple of goals). Funny it's happened to them but going out with three wins our four is a bit ridiculous. Would there have been a play-off if Dundee and Raith had identical records?
