It is being reflected in us only scoring 8 goals thus far. If you look at the last 3 seasons at the same stage we had scored 14 , 12 and 14 so there is grounds for concern.

Fair points.

But the most important stat is that we are 10th. Now that we've completed the first round of games, and played every team in the league, we have a better idea where we stand relative to our competitors. And we're above two teams currently filling the relegation and play-off spots. We have secured as many points as Dundee and St Mirren put together, and we have superior goal difference to both of them.

We could be much better: if we'd beaten Dundee, how much better would the table look? We'd be above Motherwell, for a start. And we should be disappointed to have lost to St Johnstone and Livingston as well.

So the report card so far says room for improvement. We're doing just enough, but we could be doing a lot more. I think we've got more in our locker, and if we can get our best XI playing together for a run of games, we could start to climb the table.

Room for improvement? There has been since the League Cup!!! On wednesday Motherwell did what we need to do take points off those around us and if Motherwell win against Dundee today and we lose then the league of 4 at the bottom becomes a league of 3. We have already dropped a place after Wednesday so far from improving we are deteriorating :(

After today's games we stay 10th, with 10 points. 6 points and 5 goals ahead of St Mirren, 7 points and 9 goals ahead of Dundee.

Still room for improvement. ;)

8 shots, 5 of them on target today, according to the BBC.

I make that 27 in 12. Definitely getting better.

We won ugly today. Struggle to believe we had 5 shots on target.

I agree with that, and said as much on the match thread.

There probably were five: the goal, their keeper's great save from Brustad, a Keatings shot that had the weight of a pass back, one that might have been going past the post before it was saved, and I think there was another weak effort in the first half. That's five. There were better chances than most of these that didn't include a shot, but that's a selective stat for you.

For the avoidance of doubt, I agree with the implicit argument that we need to have more attempts on goal.

*** EDIT: Wasn't there also a save from McGowan in the second half?

Back to averaging 2 shots a game. And Celtic up next but as canning keep saying games against Aberdeen Celtic and probably even st Johnsone today won’t define our season.

The issue I have with this is if that’s the case put out a team full of squad players and youth players and go for it. 4-1 rangers 6-0 hibs, 3-0 Aberdeen and 4-0 today. Squad players and youth players can’t be any worse.

That’s -16 goals and hardly a blow struck at the other end.

Here’s the sequence of shots on target. To have 8 games out of 13 where you have 2 efforts or less on target isn’t the best.

1 2 1 3 0 4 1 1 3 4 2 5 0

At least the other results again went our way.
Dundee 1-1 St Mirren and Motherwell getting hammered 7-1 at Ibrox.
Realistically the league has 8 decent teams that we’ll be unlikely to take any points from all season (1-1 draw at Rugby Park being the exception) and 4 rubbish teams. Thankfully 2 of them appear to be significantly more rubbish than us.
When Rangers, Hibs and Hearts were down and we had ICT, Ross County and Partick Thistle in the league our lack of depth and quality was less obvious and the games we could realistically take points from we’re more frequent.

Yeah Dundee are that significantly more rubbish than us that they humped us at home.
And I'd have at least 7 of StMirrens players over Cannings plethora of pish signings any day of the week.

They humped us as much as we did Motherwell in winning 0-1 with Boyd’s goal about our only decent effort.
They took their chance in the first half then scored in injury time in the second half, while we squandered numerous clear cut chances all afternoon.
The respective games should probably have finished 0-0 and 1-1. They didn’t but neither was a humping.
The league table would indicate that they are significantly more rubbish than us but we’ll know better at the end of the season.

Yes, this is our club longest period within the top flight but it's absolutely torturous to watch...no wonder our home end attendances are dwindling...I include myself in the absent fans, even though Ive got a season ticket...however, I can only take so many anti-depressant tablets (genuine fact).

Surely there should be a Club Statement tonight to announce the departure of Canning.
A blind, deaf, mute would offer more constructivity.
And take the French geezer with you Martin.
Hopeless.
