Strength in depth

Postby Willie Wastle » Fri Sep 28, 2018 7:14 pm

If we take the players who started v St Mirren as our best XI, how much depth/cover do we have for each position?

GK: If Woods is out, Fulton is the number 2. I hope he's improved on last season, when he was a great shot stopper but otherwise nervy - he's young, and I'm sure is improving. Happy with him coming in for a game or two, but I'd be concerned if Woods was out longer term.

RB: McGowan is challenged by Ziggy - happy with either.

CD: Kilgallon and Want looking good. Ziggy as cover for either, then Tshiembe.

LB: McMann's position now. Sowah as cover.

M: Daz, Martin and Imrie. Taiwo as cover, then Tshiembe, and Gogic when he's fit again.

F: Boyd and Miller. Keatings as cover, or Bingham.

CF: Brustad, possibly challenged by Ogkmpoe when he's fit again, or Bingham.

That strikes me as decent strength in depth, as long as the system continues to work. Injuries or suspensions could cause us problems, of course, but unlike recent seasons, we don't seem to lack cover in any position. Plus we've got youngsters coming through, and Hughes and Cunningham to come back from loans.

It does leave me wondering about several of the summer signings though, and whether there's still any place for Penny, Smith, Kelly or Bloomfield.

Kelly for Imrie in my opinion and Lewis Smith as cover for Miller / Boyd

G:Marsden and second choice Fulton

Defence:Morrison,McCann,Stanger and/or Gogic,Ziggy,Sowah,Tshiembe

Midfield:Aaron Smith,Lewis Smith,Taiwo,Kelly,Cunningham,Ronan Hughes and Gogic

Strikers:Bloomfield,Keatings,Bingham,Ogkympoe and to a lesser extent Tierney

Plenty cover but perhaps lacking a creative midfielder.

We have a good enough second eleven who would challenge for The Championship/First Division.

You can see why Martin has struggled to find his best team as there is cover for every position, although the sought after creative midfielder remains a problem.
What’s important is to play the best 11, rather than try to fit favourite players into the team.
He seems to have found it last week...more of the same today please.
