UEFA Youth league 2018 -19

Reading the piece about the Accies team and the UEFA Youth league I’m a bit disapointed that it doesnt seem to be a league but for those entering via the Domestic Champions path a straight knock out competition. I had assumed that we would be playing in the group stage set up. It means as far as I can see that we are only guaranteed 2 games i.e. First round home and away. The tie dates are according to wikipedia, Round 1 first leg 3rd October - 2nd leg 24 October. If we get through this round the second Round Ties again over 2 legs are 7 November and 28 November. Quite fancy an away tie somewhere warm :P

I like you TT had assumed the league set up for us however speaking to Scott Struthers he explained it in a bit more detail for me.

The uefa youth league is two different competitions that run separately till next February. Then join together. Celtic have won the league, they need to win@4 qualifiers to qualify for CL group stage. If they do then their u19 qualify for youth league champions league path. Once entrants are known for the 32 teams in actual CL then they look at entrants in late Aug early sept for a separate youth league domestic champions path which consists of 2 knock out rounds. So if we were to qualify for that there would be a home and away u19 match in October.

Still a phenomenal achievement by all and regardless of opposition a fantastic match to come and. A terrific pathway for our academy to be showcased on the biggest stage of all.

Thanks for that update. Funnily enough I thought Scott might have the answers. It is a great achievement and I am looking forward to the ties. I would think we will have a big crowd at home for that one. But it still irks that having won the league on merit we could get knocked out in the first round yet the celtic youth team who didnt win the league could end up playing 6 group games because the senior team get through to the group stages. Always been the way though Uefa look after the so called big boys.

BUT, if I read i correctly, it's possibly European Football for Accies for the first time in a competetive game.

Other than Berwick Rangers :D

And, great, that team of youngsters has been recognised by UEFA too.

Looking at the Wikpedia page for the 18 - 19 competition there are some potentially exciting teams we could be drawn against who have all qualified via the Domestic champions path. They include Chelsea, Hertha Berlin, Benefica, Dynamo Kiev, Anderlecht, Basel, Olympiakos and Red Star Belgrade to name but a few. Properly marketed, a tie against one of these could draw a couple of thousand to NDP and I would consider going tp the away tie depending on where.

Looking forward to the possibility of a big European night at NDP! 8-)

Sean for anyone considering going, Basel Fc play at St Jakobs park a short train ride from the city centre. Can you confirm ASAP that this would be the venue for the game or is it likely to be a training ground in the middle of no where. For those going important information if booking hotels etc. PS will it be all ticket :D

Awaiting confirmation on details advice is to hold off until these are confirmed.

Game most likely isnt going to be in a stadium but held at Basel's training ground we are unsure on access at this moment in time.

I think there are 3/4 fans going to the first leg on Wednesday as well as probably some parents and hopefully they will see the boys get a result. I’ve no idea the pedigree of the Fc Basel team. Like us they must have won their league so they can’t be pushovers. However I assume we have done some homework and a draw and then bring the tie back to NDP for a convincing win in front of a noisy home support will do me. I wonder if away goals rule applies? Looking forward to it.

I've been saving since 1967 for Accies getting into Europe.
Cash for flights, accomodation,beer,etc.
The last bank statement showed £63,271.
I'll pass on Basel although good luck to the boys.

Definitely fancy coming along to the home leg on Wed 24 Oct.

Do you need to get tickets in advance, or just turn up on the night?

I'm waiting till the big team make Europe.
£63k doesn't go far these days.
Especially in Switzerland , it's about a tenner a pint.
